Tina Timelapse
Update (02-09-2010):
I have completely rewritten the application a few days ago and published it under a new name: Tina Time-lapse. I have received a lot of positive feedback. Check this page for more info on the new application: Tina Time-lapse.
Somewhere in the middle of last week I suddenly felt the urge to do some programming for the Android platform. I started at 10 o'clock in the morning and I was immediately hooked. After setting up the Software Development Kit I raced through the tutorials offered by Google and started working on my own application. Because I have not worked with Java recently I wanted to keep it simple and made a small timelapse application. It is not yet available in the Android market, but this is how it looks:
And this is how it works
- Enter a name for the timelapse in the first field
- Drag the slider to set the time between photos
- Select a resolution from the dropdown menu
- Toggle the Record button to start and stop recording
The photos are stored on your SD card. Connect your phone to your computer and put it in Mass Storage mode (or something similar which allows you to access the SD card). You will find a folder called "TinaTimelapse" on the root of the SD card, open this folder. The images are stored in a folder with the name you entered in step one. Open this folder to find the images.
How to convert the images into a playable movie
In this tutorial video the process will be explained, be sure to watch in HD!

I really liked what you showed me the other day! Great job! I'd say some more interaction/graphical design and upload it to te Market for €1 or so :-)

Thanks! I am in the process of getting a Google Checkout account, so I can not market it yet. But I will try to improve the interaction and graphical design because this is maybe a little too basic ;-).

Hi Zaphod and Russel, thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately I do not own a HTC Hero or Motorola Milestone. So it is going to be difficult to find out what is going wrong. Do you have these problems with other camera applications as well?

It works on HTCDesire, but most of the recorded images are way under- or over-exposed.

@KJL_Kurt, I received an error report coming from a droid phone, it has got something to do with the camera not properly initializing.
@Sune, I own a HTC Desire myself too, which I use to test the application. I have not encountered your problems, in what conditions did you record the timelapse? E.g. the lighting etc.
I will be working on a big update for this application soon, thanks for your feedback.

I have completely rewritten the application today and published it under a new name: Tina Time-lapse. I am hopeful that this new version will work on more devices.

For me it Forces close at 99 images per folder; (Nexus One Android 2.2 Build FRF91)
Also the filename for image 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 could use 0 in front for sort by filename convenience. (ie. 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09)
Otherwise very nice work!

@Korey, I have implemented the leading zeros in the latest version (2.4), thank you for suggesting.
I also added some error descriptions, which you might see when the application force closes. If you could tell me what error you get I might be able to fix it.
Thanks!

I really like the app. I wish it would run in the background or have an option for that. I would like to play around with the src code if you dont mind sending it to me. I'm a college student just learning how to do some of this stuff.

@alex unfortunately the Android API does not allow for an application to take a picture in the background (as far as I know).
I am considering open sourcing the next version of this application. I will post something on this site when it is, so do follow my RSS feed ;).

Works well with Google Nexus One phone. Unfortunatly Avidemux pixelates some of the resulting video. The individual pictures are ok, guess i need to play around with the settings in Avidemux.

Very nice program. I enjoy mounting my phone in the windshield and recording my drive. There is a bug with the GPS Exif tags. The numerator of the lat and lon degrees are signed numbers when they should be unsigned.

@Timothy Gladstone, thank you for letting me know about the GPS Exif tags, I will fix this.

Hi,
great program. Is there any way to start and stop the program aurtomatically so that it doesn't take pictures after dark? Also could it include a date/time stamp? Thanks

Ziet er mooi uit Wessel maar moet het maar eens in het echt zien. Jammer dat je nooit de 'urge' krijgt om 50 km te gaan fietsen op jouw mooie racefiets.
